Meet Your Downtown

Meet: Kristell Geffroy, Owner of Swenn, located in the Confederation Court Mall (134 Kent St.)

Tell us about your business:

Established in Montreal in 2017, Swenn is a Canadian-made clothing brand that presents organic and natural unisex clothing and accessories inspired by the nautical universe. The brand expanded to PEI in 2022, infusing a vibrant touch into the local scene. This move to the East Coast symbolizes Swenn's dedication to exploring and enriching diverse Canadian landscapes.

What is unique about your business?

Swenn's uniqueness lies in our commitment to local and organic processes, engaging local makers to craft garments with a focus on the human aspect. We prioritize the "Made in Canada" or North America label, advocating for a return to slow fashion, sustainability, and creating meaningful, timeless, and stylish collections. Our blend of ethics and fashion sets Swenn apart in offering a truly distinctive and purpose-driven clothing line.

What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

The decision to become an entrepreneur stemmed from a desire to merge fashion, a cool and happy vibe, and ethical practices, a combination I couldn't find in existing local brands. In 2016, a road trip through the Maritimes exposed me to the remarkable skills of Canadian craft artists. Witnessing the potential of blending their work with my vision of fashion, I envisioned Swenn. Having spent a decade in the fast fashion industry as a designer, I sought to break free from its norms. I aspired to create a brand with purpose, prioritizing people and the environment while celebrating Canadian roots, energy, and creativity.

What do you love most about operating a business in Downtown Charlottetown?

Operating Swenn in Downtown Charlottetown is a delightful experience, the continuous expansion of the economy and business opportunities provides a promising potential for my businesses. Downtown has a friendly and supportive local community, who have an appreciation for locally made products. The Downtown’s welcoming atmosphere and the city's commitment to it’s vibrant and attractive culture aligns perfectly with Swenn's ethos, contributing to a mutually beneficial relationship.

What is your favorite product or service that you offer?

Swenn's product lineup is like a family of diverse personalities, making it challenging to pick favorites. However, if pressed, I must admit a particular fondness for our knitwear collection. This collection, crafted in collaboration with skilled makers in Quebec, holds a special place in my heart. Working with the precious natural wool material, we bring these pieces to life from scratch, witnessing the transformation from raw material to a warm, breathable, and durable garment.

Do you have a favorite saying/motto/phrase?

"Navigate Your Style" encapsulates the essence of Swenn, encouraging individuals to embrace their personal style journey.

If you had a piece of advice for new businesses, what would it be?

Prioritize quality, stay true to your values, and build genuine connections with your community.

Why is it important to support local? How can Islanders support small businesses?

Supporting local is not just a transaction; it's a commitment to building a resilient and thriving community. In the current challenging times marked by climate changes and economic uncertainties, the importance of buying local has become more pronounced than ever. When Islanders choose to support local businesses, they are not merely making a purchase; they are contributing to the economic richness of the entire community.

Buying local is a powerful choice with far-reaching impacts. It sustains the livelihoods of local entrepreneurs, creating a ripple effect that extends to their families and employees. Moreover, it fosters a sense of community and connection, as every transaction is a personal interaction that goes beyond a mere business exchange. It fortifies the local economy, nurtures a sense of belonging, and helps build a resilient foundation that can weather the storms of change.

Final thoughts?

In closing, I'd like to reflect on the essence of Swenn—a brand that intertwines timeless elegance with a commitment to sustainability. While we celebrate our Canadian roots and maritime inspiration, there's a deeper narrative woven into the fabric of Swenn. It's a narrative of resilience, adaptability, and the power of embracing change.

In the heart of Downtown Charlottetown, amid the vibrant community that appreciates locally made products, Swenn is more than a brand; it's a celebration of craftsmanship, sustainability, and the beauty of slow fashion. As we continue this journey, I invite everyone to explore not just the garments but the stories they carry—the stories of resilience, creativity, and a commitment to creating a positive impact on the world.

Meet: Havana Tram, Owner of Havana & Co. located at 119 Kent St. 2nd floor.

Havana & Co. opened on the 2nd floor of the Confederation Court Mall in 2023. We are dedicated to curating products that celebrate the purity and authenticity of nature. From our handmade soaps to curated handbags, we believe in the power of natural ingredients and thoughtful design.

What is unique about your business?

Havana & Co.'s products emphasize quality and functionality. It's about simplifying the choices for customers, offering them products that seamlessly integrate into their lives.

What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

I've always been drawn to the world of creating something from scratch, building a brand that resonates with people. My enthusiasm for turning ideas into reality permeates every aspect of my business, setting the tone for a brand that is not just about products but a lifestyle.

What are your business goals over the next 5 years?

In the next 5 years, my primary business goal is to significantly expand our market share across Canada, establishing a nationwide presence for our company. To achieve this, we plan to

- Restructure our business model by strategically outsourcing certain aspects through a business consultant partner. This move will enhance efficiency and allow us to focus on our core competencies.

- Additionally, we aim to lead in skincare innovation by establishing new Havana & Co. labs, dedicated to developing a comprehensive skincare solution. This commitment to research and development will position us as a professional skincare brand in industry.

Why do your Customers/Clients love your business?

Customers appreciate our business for several reasons, including our commitment to quality, innovative products, and customer-centric approach.

What is your favourite product?

While I cherish all our products as a brand owner, if I were to suggest a standout favorite, it would be our exquisite Coconut Soap. Its unique blend captures the essence of simplicity and natural beauty, offering a refreshing and indulgent experience that perfectly embodies the essence of Havana & Co.

What do you love most about operating a business in Downtown Charlottetown?

I absolutely love operating a business in Downtown Charlottetown for its vibrant community and unique charm. The bustling atmosphere and the strong sense of local support create a special environment. Being part of this dynamic downtown scene allows us to connect with our customers on a personal level, fostering a sense of community that goes beyond transactions. It's the perfect backdrop for our brand, and we appreciate the warmth and character that Downtown Charlottetown brings to our business.

Do you have a favourite saying/motto/phrase?

 “Less is more”

If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

Embrace authenticity and stay true to your vision.

Why is it important to support local? How can Islanders best support your business?

Supporting local is crucial for fostering a vibrant community and sustaining the unique character of our island. For Havana & Co., the best support involves not only choosing our products but also spreading the word. Share your positive experiences, engage with us on social media, and encourage others to discover the simplicity and elegance of Havana & Co. By doing so, you play a vital role in ensuring our business continues to thrive.

What is your favourite thing to do when you are not at your business?

When I'm not at the business, my favorite is indulging in the beauty of PEI through scenic drives and exploring new paths. These moments of exploration recharge me, allowing me to bring renewed energy and creativity back to Havana & Co.

Is there anything else you'd like to say?

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the warm welcome and the privilege of being part of this wonderful Island community. Your support has been the cornerstone of Havana & Co.'s journey here. Thank you for embracing us, and we're excited about the journey ahead together!

Meet: Shacharouna Gordon, Co-Owner of Boonoonoonoos PEI, located at 177 Great George St.

Tell us about your business, when did you open?

Boonoonoonoos is a Jamaican restaurant in Downtown Charlottetown. We first opened at the BioFoodTech on November 5, 2022, operating from a ghost kitchen where customers could not come inside to order, they had to order through Door Dash and Skip the Dishes. Then, with the support of the community we now have the physical location that opened in May of 2023 on Great George St.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce our team: first, we have Pueuetanist Nesta Robinson who is the head chef and my husband. He has 20 years of experience in the food service industry and provides the quality good food served at Boonoonoonoos. Dwight MacEwan who is a business partner, two part-time staff, and my son who helps us on the weekends. As for myself, I handle the day-to-day operations of this business which includes costumer service, assisting the chef, cleaning, dish washing, and upkeeping.

What is unique about your business?

The most unique thing about Boonoonoonoos is that we make our own sauces & spices from scratch. Our sauces and spices range in variety of spice levels: mild, medium, and hot.

We also offer natural made from scratch juices: mango, watermelon, and cucumber, pineapple, and carrot.

What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

My background, I come from an entrepreneur home – my whole family is in business and have never worked for anyone else. What inspired me in PEI to open this restaurant is that when I came here in 2010, there was no Caribbean food or entertainment. I wanted to be a part of that change and that’s why I was inspired to open Boonoonoonoos.

What are your business goals over the next 5 years?

I just completed my 5-year school plan and am now looking forward at my business plan: I am thinking about opening a franchise all over Canada and want PEI to be my founder and head office for everything that we are doing. I am hoping that I will have my second location in Moncton within the next 5 years. Secondly, I want to open a non-profit organization for Caribbean people so they can bring us any issues or problems they are facing and we can help them.

Why do your Customers/Clients love your business?

The food. Our customers are excited about having something new to try in Charlottetown.

What is your favourite product?

Oxtail! It is an expensive meat, but it is my favourite.

Are you working on any new products?

Right now, I am hoping to become a finalist in the Food Island Partnership competition which will help to get our spices out there on the grocery market. As for our menu, seafood is the number one thing we want to work on - PEI is a seafood island and Jamaica does a lot of seafood, some examples are seafood chowder, deep fried lobster, a seafood platter, and a seafood fiesta where everything is cooked all together.

What do you love most about operating a business in Downtown Charlottetown?

The thing I love most about operating in downtown is that there are so many offices and businesses, and we are located between the UPEI and Holland College. Plus, during tourism season, downtown is the place to be – tourist love to spend the majority of their time in downtown.

Do you have a favourite saying/motto/phrase?

Taste the goodness of Jamaica.

If you had a piece of advice for a new business, to help them succeed, what would it be?

I would suggest that if you can go into any courses like a 16-week startup course or just educate yourself, do research on marketing – that is what I did. Also take advantage of grants and funding that are available because startups are not easy.

Why is it important to support local?

The majority of products that we use such as meats and rice are locally sourced – supporting a local business supports other local businesses.

What is your favourite thing to do when you are not at your business?

Dancing. I was a professional dancer back home; I do Jamaican culture dance. I found out that when I am stressed, if I play music and start to dance – those stresses are relieved. As a business owner, I take 2 times a day, before and after work, as a moment for myself to dance.

Is there anything else you would like people to know about Boonoonoonoos?

Boonoonoonoos has 3 sections of the business: the restaurant, the spices and sauces, and our events. We want to introduce Jamaican culture to PEI, we don’t just want to sell food, we want people to come in here and have a great time. We are always interested in doing collaboration for events – we encourage people to partner with us for events, you get the door and we get the bar. Follow us on Instagram to check out all the upcoming events.

Our final question is how do pronounce your restaurant name?

Boo – noo – noo - noos! Always remember 3 n’s & 1 s.

Meet: Ash Mehndiratta, Owner of Strikers Den, located at 172 Great George St.

Tell us about your business:

Strikers Den opened on April Fool’s Day, 2023. Located on Great George Street in Downtown Charlottetown, we are a one-of-its-kind entertainment center and game store offering unique tabletop games from around the globe. Rain, snow, or shine, Strikers Den offers a fun space for all ages to unwind, play, or buy games. Our center is also available for hosting birthday parties and social events.

What is unique about your business?

While arcades have been around for ages and board games cafes can be found in every city, our offering is unique – dexterity and classic games from different parts of the world, like Latvia, Holland, India, Denmark, France, the UK, China, the US, and of course, Canada. We also have some superbly hand-crafted ancient games that were played by ancient Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Romans, Vikings, and Celts. And our retail section includes a great collection of clue-guessing, co-operative, stacking, dexterity, memory, pattern-matching, party, classic, cards, and strategy board games.

Why do your Customers/Clients love your business?

“Wow! I have never seen anything like this” or “This is a really cool spot!” are phrases we hear almost every day. Our customers love exploring our collection of games, many of them they haven’t played or even heard of before.

What do you love most about operating a business in Downtown Charlottetown?

Downtown Charlottetown is a vibrant cultural hub offering a variety of choices such as theatre, music, bookshops, artsy shops, and entertainment. Strikers Den takes pride in becoming a contributor to the eclectic mix. Moreover, most of our business comes from tourists and visitors so being located in downtown is a big plus.

What is your favourite thing to do in Downtown Charlottetown?

Strolling through the streets and the harbourfront with my wife, exploring dining options, enjoying a cup of coffee…

Do you have a favourite saying/motto/phrase?

You never win any games you don’t play.

If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

When you have a great product, service or experience to offer at a reasonable price, customers will eventually discover it. Don’t let a slow day or a slow week make you think otherwise.

Why is it important to support local? How can Islanders best support your business?

Local businesses add character to a community or a town and their viability depends on local support. Islanders can help by sharing their experience with their friends and family on social media. Google reviews would be great too.

Final thoughts?

There’s nothing more satisfying when you move from “someday I want to open a…” to actually opening it, and then witnessing your customers enjoy your creation!

Meet: Mary Beth Campbell, Owner of Luxury Market Consignment Boutique, located at 94 Queen Street. Photo (left to right): Alla Lebedeva, Mary Beth Campbell, Shelley MacDougall

Tell us about your business:

We are a consignment shop that opened 6 years ago (2017), in Downtown Charlottetown. As a consignment shop, people will bring us their items of clothing/apparel and we sell them in the shop for a commission of the sale.

What is unique about your business?

We turn you closet into cash – many people will use that cash to then upgrade their wardrobe. The other unique aspect of Luxury Market is that we are recycling clothing.

What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

I was never very good at school as I have trouble sitting down and focusing, being an entrepreneur allows me to move around and be myself.

Why do your Customers/Clients love your business?

Clients love that they can purchase unique pieces that they wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else.

What do you love most about operating a business in Downtown Charlottetown?

Meeting new people and my customers – I love seeing happy returning faces.

What is your favourite thing to do in Downtown Charlottetown (when you’re off the clock)?

I love to walk around and chat with other local business owners.

Do you have a favourite saying/motto/phrase?

Be Kind and Be Bold.

If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

  • Be creative, try to offer a unique experience, service, product.
  • Social media!!!
  • Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself.
  • Last but not least, your customers are the most important thing about your business.

Why is it important to support local? How can Islanders best support your business?

Supporting local allows businesses to hire local people and in turn supports the community in many ways.

Final thoughts?

We are so grateful for our customers and the people who continue to support us. It has been an interesting few years and people have stuck with us through it all.

Meet: Nguyen Thuc Khue Phung , Owner of The Bamboo Home , located in The Confederation Court Mall (134 Kent St.)

Tell us about your business:

The Bamboo Home is a retail store located on the ground floor of the Confederation Court Mall in downtown Charlottetown. We have been here for more than 1 year and focus on household products made from various natural materials. This is the place where customers can find a range of different household products such as: trays, baskets, papasan chairs, mats, lamp shades, mirrors and more!

What is unique about your business?

We only sell environment friendly products made from natural materials.

What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

It has been my dream for many years to start up my own business with the products I love. It was always my hope to introduce my beloved products to more and more people. So, I gave up a 9-5 banking job to start working on this new business. And I know I’m doing the right thing because customers have told me how lovely this corner is and how beautiful the products are… Some customers have said thanks for bringing these great products to the island. All of these compliments are great motivations for me to continue doing my business. Now, our target is to have at least 1 of our products in every PEI family.

Why do your Customers/Clients love your business?

I think everyone loves baskets, and they can find a collection of different shapes and sizes here in the shop. We have set up a small but warm and cozy space with many beautiful items.

What do you love most about operating a business in Downtown Charlottetown?

This is a very good location in a friendly community where I have received a lot of supports to set up and grow up my business. From this place, I have sold my products to customers in other surrounding provinces (NB, NS, ON) and US. It has always been our proud to mark the products “from Charlottetown, PE”.

What is your favourite thing to do when you are not at your business?

I’m back to a mom’s role after business time. I spend time with my two little boys, playing and reading with them. They can easily make my energy recharged to start a new day.

Do you have a favourite saying/motto/phrase?

When there’s a will, there’s a way.

If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

Starting a business is never easy, so keep trying and moving and you can do it. Although Charlottetown is a very friendly and supportive place for new businesses, it is a small community, so focus some time on online selling activities by utilizing online platforms to promote your products to other communities, other provinces, and even other neighbour countries.

Why is it important to support local? How can Islanders best support your business?

This beautiful Charlottetown has small population making word of mouth more powerful tool here. Our store is a small space in the mall, so there’re many islanders who haven’t heard about us yet. So, if possible, please share our store name and our products on local groups to support our business. Altogether, we could support each other and grow up a strong local business community here.

Any final thoughts or comments?

I feel grateful and proud to be a part of this peaceful and friendly community. It’s always wonderful to be able to pursue what we love to do, and seeing our kids grow up every day.

Meet: Bill McArthur, Owner of Liquid Gold Tasting Bar/Olive Oils & Vinegars, located in The Confederation Court Mall (134 Kent St.).  Photo: Bill McArthur (left) & Myrna Burlock (right)

Tell us about your business:

Liquid Gold Olive Oils & Vinegars opened in Charlottetown in 2011 and – at that time – was only the second store of its kind in Canada, the first being Liquid Gold in Halifax. We are artisan merchants of the freshest, healthiest, and most flavourful extra virgin olive oils (EVOO) and balsamic vinegars that you will find anywhere.

What is unique about your business?

Our products cannot be found anywhere else. Our stores celebrate that by looking unlike anything most shoppers have ever seen. Our try it-before-you-buy it instore experience is our way of proving our fundamental promise, - specifically:

  •  that truly fresh EVOO
  • that comes from quality olive fruit,
  • that is harvested early and crushed quickly,
  • that comes from both the North and South hemisphere growing seasons and,
  • that is subject to rigorous, independent laboratory testing for authenticity.
  • leads directly to quality you can taste and feel. We call it the authenticity that “sparkles”

Why do your Customers/Clients love your business?

The “sparkle” of Liquid Gold EVOO and balsamic make food better tasting and healthier. It is hard to walk away from that simple promise if the products that make it measure up with every single visit and every single purchase.

What do you love most about operating a business in Downtown Charlottetown?

Downtown Charlottetown is the heartbeat of PEI. It provides an energy that is palpable for island residents and visitors alike. Having an eclectic mix of shops and experiences is part of Charlottetown’s energy and we are thrilled to be able to contribute to it and, in turn, feed off of it.

What is your favourite thing to do in Downtown Charlottetown?

Walk about. Dine about. Shop about. Stroll the waterfront. Visit with old friends and meet new ones.

Do you have a favourite saying/motto/phrase?

A business is like a garden Take care of it, so it can take care of you.

Why is it important to support local? How can Islanders best support your business?

Supporting local is the right thing to do, with 2 provisions:

1. A business cannot take “local” for granted.

2. Arrange the business around quality, service, convenience, and value. They are consumer drivers, not local.

Do you have any final thoughts?

Bring this story into the shop and receive 15% off.  What can we say? We are merchants. We can’t help it!

Meet: Beth Arsenault, Owner of Blank Canvas Art Supplies, located at 10 Prince St.

Tell us about your business:

We opened July 4th, 2023. Blank Canvas Art Supplies is a woman-run, specialty retail store in downtown Charlottetown. We offer a wide selection of art and craft supplies for professionals to amateurs, beginners, and hobbyists. At its core, Blank Canvas caters to anyone and everyone who wants to create no matter their age or skill level. Art supply stores are not just for artists. We hope everyone will feel comfortable in the space and be surprised by what they’ll find. There is a classroom available to rent to hold classes and workshops as well as a room for artists to sell their work in store. Blank Canvas came from 5 years of dreaming.

What is unique about your business?

Although we’re small, we fit a lot of products into the shop. We’re dedicated to getting in the products our customers want. We offer special orders and always keep a running list of what people are asking for.

What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

I wanted to be my own boss. Even though I worked for some great people over the years (and some not-so-great people), I knew this is what I wanted to do and that I was capable.

Why do your customers love your business?

Honestly, the selection of products and affordable prices surprise a lot of people who come to check out the store. People assume we’ll be too expensive, and while there are some higher priced items, we also have affordable options too. Customers light up when they see all of the supplies and it’s obvious that their brains are getting into a creative mode.

What do you love most about operating a business in Downtown Charlottetown?

It feels good to be back on the Island and working alongside artists and anyone who is looking for ways to bring out their creative side.

What is your favourite thing to do in Downtown Charlottetown?

We’ve been checking out all the different restaurants and local events. And going for walks, it’s nice to have the water so close and Charlottetown is a beautiful place to wander around.

What is your favourite thing to do when you are not at your business?

Sleep. Seriously, by the time I’m finished for the day, I am physically and mentally exhausted.

Do you have a favourite saying/motto/phrase?

It’s not so much a saying or motto, but when customers say how much they love art supplies I find my response to be, “I get it, I love art supplies so much I opened a shop!”

If you had a piece of advice for any new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

Do what makes you happy. Take any help & advice that others offer. Ask questions, even if you think they’re dumb. Do your research. And give yourself a break every now and then.

Why is it important to support local? How can Islanders best support your business?

Starting and operating any business is time consuming, it is incredibly expensive and takes all of your energy. It’s a 24 hour, 7 days a week commitment. Most new small businesses don’t have a safety net to fall back during slower times. There will always be things against, high rents, slow months, big business competition with lower prices. The best way Islander’s can support mine or any small business is to keep coming back, ask for products or brands you want to purchase, don’t assume what we have is all we’ll ever have. We’re constantly evolving, we’ll never be stagnant. Word of mouth is huge on PEI, so please share. Small businesses can only survive with the community’s support.

Final thoughts?

Having your own business will make you feel so many different things from one second to the next. Don’t let the negative feelings keep you down. And if you do stumble or fall, just pick yourself back up and try again.

Meet: Ryan Abdallah, Owner of Cedar's Eatery & Baba's Lounge, 181 Great George Street.

Why this Business, when did you open?

Cedar's Eatery was founded by my family in 1979, now open 42 years. My parents Maroun & Nawal ran it until 2010 when I took it over. My parents immigrated from Lebanon and weren't afraid of work. They embraced the restaurant life with next to no prior experience, but with their love of food and passion for entertaining, they were able to create a place known for exceptional food and service. They were proudly committed to serving the finest Lebanese Cuisine, using recipes that have been in our family for generations. These menu items were paired with some of the most popular Canadian-based Island favourites to create a unique and diverse selection of food that has over time, become one of the staples of downtown dining. Baba's Lounge opened in 1991 and became one of the most intimate live-music venues in the country, fortunate enough to host some of the best musicians known to come out of Canada.

What is unique about your business?

Sometimes I feel like everything is unique about this business. We are one of the longest running family-owned and operated restaurants on the island and have had the chance to host some of Canada's best musicians in a venue with a stage smaller than some people's living rooms!

Why an entrepreneur’s life?

I essentially grew up in this place. From age 3, I can remember being around the kitchen and in the restaurant. I guess it just grew on me, having been immersed in it for such a long time. I didn't really choose it, you could say - it chose me! I have learned so many skills, met so many different people, and formed so many connections with community that realise now it was an opportunity that I would have never gotten had I chosen a different path.

What do you love most about operating your business in Downtown Charlottetown?

The location and the people. Being downtown offers the chance to be part of those who live nearby, work nearby, or are visiting - as a tourist or islanders’ home for a holiday. I also really value the relationships that I have built with the people that surround me and form the basis of the business - from delivery drivers, to suppliers, and the tradespeople we depend on.

Why do your clients love your business?

We strive to offer consistent and delicious food, paired with excellent customer service and a cozy, inviting atmosphere. I think all our regular patrons feel at home when they come to the restaurant.

What’s the favorite item/product that you sell?

The M'jadera & Fattouche - it's easily the most filling and refreshing vegetarian meal. I eat this dish a few times a week!

What’s your favourite saying/motto/phrase?

The restaurant is like an extension of our living room, and our customers are treated like guests of our home.

If you had a piece of advice for new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

You are the backbone of your business - take care of yourself!

Why is it important to support local?

I think the pandemic has showed us the importance of community and choosing local for sourcing as much as we can. Businesses get stronger and flourish when we can all work together.

How can Islanders support small business?

Choose local, family run options when you can.

Meet: Madison Gallant, Owner of Silver & Sage, 64 Queen St.

When did you open Silver & Sage?

Silver & Sage opened in Downtown Charlottetown in 2022 but the first Silver & Sage was opened in 2020.

Tell us a little bit about Silver & Sage:

Crystals are the biggest part of the shop, an obsession really, but the shop is also filled with everything on trend - new and vintage.

We also offer all kinds of workshop classes every week such as stained glass, needle felting, macramé and painting to name a few! They’re taught by a wonderful group of instructors so

there really is something for everyone here at silver & Sage.

What do your clients love most about your business?

We have a lot of unique items here and there is always something new. People have mentioned that the store feels like their brain has been opened up and all of their interests were put into the store. They also love the workshops, it’s a great way to try something new!

What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

I come from a family of entrepreneurs, in fact the building next to my shop was my father’s and grandfather’s business for years. Then there is the fact that I have loved making and creating since I was a little girl, which evolved to making sterling silver jewellery, then into Silver & Sage.

What do you love most about operating a business in Downtown Charlottetown?

The people, for sure! I have made friends with clients and customer I’ve met in the shop, and I always love chatting with the tourists.

What is the favorite item and/or service from your business?

Crystals & Workshops.

Do you have a favourite phrase?

“This is my happy place”

If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

Listen to your customers’ wants and needs. Go into everyday being grateful. Work as hard as you can because it pays off in the end.

Why is it important to support local? How can Islanders support small business?

It is important to support local because none of us would be here without our family, friends, and neighbours supporting us. The best way to support local is to shop local when possible and if that is not possible, engage on social media and share with friends and family.

Final thoughts?

I really want to express how grateful I am to be apart of Downtown Charlottetown, the place where I grew up, and now am lucky enough to have my shop. Really Grateful.

Meet: Erika Killam, David Whitty, & the instructors of Charlottetown Yoga Space, interview with Erika Killam, located at 49 Pownal St. Photo: Kate Forget (top left), David Whitty, Erika Killam, Charlie Kennedy, Smita Prakash (middle left), Chris Skinner, Karlie Fitzpatrick, Deirdre Kessler (bottom left), Leone Curtis, Gabrielle Roddy, Ouma Cuniah.

In a paragraph, tell us about your business:

The original intent was to provide an open space for yoga teachers to offer their own programming. It became quickly apparent that a collective effort was more effective, so ultimately, we ended up with the best of both! The Space offers an unlimited schedule through the collective effort of multiple instructors as well as a place for independent instructors to run their own series/workshops. The majority of the revenue goes right back to the instructor, so if you attend class, you are directly supporting your teacher.

What is unique about your business OR what do your clients love most about your business?

We’re laid back! I think people have a sense that a yoga class is going to be intimidating or very strict or serious. They have that impression because, let’s face it, some yoga classes/studios are like that! We’re not. Most likely you’ll be warmly greeted like part of the family, welcomed by not only your instructor but also by the other students.

What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

Not a decision, really, more of a necessity! If there is a certain way you want something done, sometimes you have to do it yourself!

What do you love most about operating a business in Downtown Charlottetown?

Being part of a collective community with lots of support from organizations like Downtown Chtown!

What is the favorite item/product/service from your business?

Our instructors! That sounds a little strange as they are certainly not for sale, but they are what makes The Space special and unique. We have passionate instructors from all over the world, with unique backgrounds, diverse experience and loads of talent who so openly & authentically share their teachings with the students. They are truly what makes yoga at The Space so special!

Do you have a favourite saying/motto/phrase?

We often refer to the studio as “A place to make space” space to move, space to think, space to breathe, space try new things.

If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

Have patience and be consistent!

Why is it important to support local? How can Islanders support small business?

Support local so you have great places to go! You see it and we feel it all the time, when folks choose to or are forced to access services elsewhere - local small businesses don’t survive. Then when we are ready to get back out and enjoy what our city has to offer… there are fewer quality places to go. Small business owners bring a passion and uniqueness to their establishments that is unmatched by franchise or big box retailers.

Meet: Melissa Evans, Owner of Coast to Coast, located at 270B, 119 Kent Street, BDC Building

When did Coast to Coast open?

Opened in November of 2019 in British Columbia before relocating to PEI.

Tell us about your business:

Coast to Coast specializes in Cosmetic Tattooing first and foremost. I started with doing Eyebrow Tattoo services and now have expanded my portfolio in the last couple years to include Cosmetic Tattoo enhancements for Lips, Liner, Scalp and Scarring/Restorative work due to trauma. Since November of 2021 I have added three incredible women to the Coast to Coast roster. Our extremely talented Master Aesthetician Kelly specializes in Acne treatments, Microneedling, Relaxation Facials and Waxing. Brianna is our Lash Queen who specializes in Eyelash Extensions and will be bringing on some new services in 2023. Sarah is our amazing Registered Massage Therapist who keeps all our backs in tip top shape. I really wanted to build a well-rounded studio where our clients could get a bit of everything. I’m always wanting to bring in new services to keep things fresh and current. I’m so proud to have these women by my side and I only see great things for all of us and our clients moving forward.

What is unique about your business?

Coast to Coast is the only studio in PEI that offers all these services in one place. Its truly a collective of women and treatment options. It is also the only place that offers the type of Cosmetic Tattooing. I love being able to offer this service in such a remote part of Canada. I’ve heard PEI is always the last to get all the "cool things" so having current techniques here brings me such joy for everyone who comes to see me. I want to be able to give my clients the best results possible and that’s what we are doing.

What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

I always felt I was meant to be a leader. I fell naturally into managerial roles and work well under pressure. I also fell victim of the dreaded 90s brow and over plucked all my eyebrow hair. After some research I discovered I could permanently put eyebrows back on my face and my curiosity grew stronger from there. I have been painting and drawing since I can remember so I thought I could totally do this. Once I had my daughter, I decided to leave the Health Industry, take my first tattoo course, and go out on my own. I wanted to be able to spend as much time with my daughter as possible, make my own hours, and help people in a really fun life changing way.

What do you love most about operation a business in Downtown Charlottetown?

I always knew I wanted to be downtown before even moving to Charlottetown! I remember manifesting this dream while packing up our things and getting ready for the big move. I love the historic buildings, the busyness, parks, water and being able to walk somewhere after work and enjoy a nice meal. I grew up living in Toronto, Calgary, and Kelowna and have always loved the city vibe. Downtown Charlottetown has so much character, I don't see the business being anywhere else.

What is your favorite service that you offer at Coast to Coast?

Gosh, there’s so many to choose from! I love all of our services because they allow people to feel their best which is so important when going about our lives. Giving clients confidence has been at the forefront of Coast to Coast and I think we are nailing that. If I’m going to plug a product though, Id say our Medical Grade Skincare Line "Vivier" takes the cake. It truly is changing people’s skin and I get messages daily about how it's changed their life. We use Vivier in all our facials including our new service the "Acne Clinic". This is a treatment that targets acne long term and creates a plan for our clients. We have so much more coming in this realm of Skincare and we can’t wait to share it with everyone.

Do you have a favourite saying/motto/phrase?

I’m not sure about a Motto, but I’m always encouraging everyone to celebrate their wins. I think we can get so busy and wrapped up in bills, to do lists and all the other Adulting tasks, that we forget to slow down and take a moment to reflect and really enjoy what we have accomplished. Kelly has returned back to work after becoming a Mom and taking on new product line education, new services and stepping into a whole new role within her career. Sarah just had her 100th client book in since starting as a new Entrepreneur herself in September. Brianna will be celebrating her one year of Lashing/Entrepreneurship come November. And for me I’m celebrating the expansion after 2.5 years in PEI. The business has managed to survive a pandemic, a cross country move and allowed me to give opportunity to others to grow and thrive, which is definitely something to celebrate.

If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

Hire an accountant. Lol. Also, you don't have to have every detail worked out. I never went to business school and most entrepreneurs haven't. As long as you stay disciplined and know what your "why" is then you're already way ahead.

Why is it important to support local? How can Islanders support small business?

Supporting Local is important for so many reasons. It has less of environmental impact, builds strong communities, creates more jobs, keeps our dollar in the local economy. I could go on! The best way to support local is to purchase local. If you do not have the means to do so then sharing local business pages on social media, liking, and commenting on our posts. Sharing and exposure is the modern-day way to support and really means the world to us. More than people realize.

Final thoughts?

Thank you to everyone who has supported Coast to Coast. As someone who is not from here, it was intimidating moving to a new province we had never been to before. We took a big leap of faith coming here for a new start and I wouldn't change a thing. I truly value all the connections I’ve made along the way, the life stories I’ve been able to be a part of and the trust in my clients who chose me as their Artist. It really means everything.

Meet: The team at Lady Baker’s Tea (left: Carla Turner, Packaging; Sandy Nicholson, Operations Manager; Uan Nguyen Y Le, Owner; Shannon Scales, Marketing Manager) 217 Pownal Street, Charlottetown

Tell us about your Business:

Why this Business?

Lady Baker’s Tea is a little tea company with a big dream. Our premium loose-leaf teas are ethically produced at the finest tea gardens in Asia and Africa. We begin with the best seasonal quality tea and have developed a growing number of custom blends that incorporate ingredients grown right here on our island. With approximately 50 varieties, we have teas for every taste and occasion.

Founded 15 years ago in 2007, Lady Baker’s Tea began its journey at the Charlottetown Farmers’ Market. As a member of the Tea and Herbal Association of Canada, Lady Baker’s Tea supports Fair Trade and the Ethical Tea Partnership.

What is unique about your Business?

We are a female owned and operated business that is very passionate about all things tea. We take great pride in curating our selection of the highest quality teas and have a hands-on and inviting approach to sharing our love and knowledge of our product with our customers. Getting to share our love and passion for tea is what it is all about.

Why an entrepreneur life?

It is wonderful to be part of a thriving local business. There are endless opportunities for creativity and growth.

What do you love most about operating your business in Downtown Charlottetown?

We love meeting our customers face to face and helping them choose the perfect teas, for themselves or as a gift. It is so exciting getting to introduce customers to new flavours and varieties and seeing them return, with enthusiasm, for more.

When customers shop at Lady Baker’s Tea, they know they are getting a high-quality product that has been made and packaged with care and love; we take a lot of pride in that.

What’s your favorite product?

We love our tea samplers that allow customers to be introduced to a great variety of teas in one go. Often, new favourites are found this way. That is one of our favourite things - watching our customers fall in love with our tea!

What’s your favourite motto?

At Lady Baker’s Tea, our motto is “Take Time for What Matters”. Sipping on a cup of tea is the perfect time to reflect on the things that matter in your life. Those little moments of reflection and introspection are so important, and we like to think that a simple, warming cup of tea can help bring those thoughts into focus.

If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, what would it be?

Be bold and passionate, but also adaptable to changing times.

Why is it important to support local?

When you support a local business-like Lady Baker’s Tea, you are helping to keep money within our community and are supporting individuals right here at home. Every sale, big or small, is received with excitement and gratitude and every customer is remembered and appreciated.

How can Islanders support small businesses?

Meet: Lacey Koughan, Owner of 24Strong, 159 Kent St.

“Empowering PEI Youth Through Dance, Fitness & Confidence Building Programs”

What is unique about your business?

24Strong takes a modern approach as a dance studio; rather than traditional recital last year, they created a film, and which premiered at the Drive-in theatre, with a red carpet, and all. They make a point to focus on confidence and unique training avenues for student based on individual goals.

Why an entrepreneur’s life?

“I don’t think I could do anything else”. Lacey says she has always been independent and self-motivated. If you ask anyone in her life, they will say that she was meant to do what she is doing now.

What do you love most about operating your business in Downtown Charlottetown?

In Downtown you are at the centre of everything. People can see your name, your business, and who you are by simply walking by. There is always an opportunity to be involved in the things happening in the Downtown.

Why do your clients love your business?

Lacey feels that her clients really have fun at 24Strong, and because she herself is young at 22, it makes it easy to relate to each other. Clients also enjoy the wide range of program opportunities offered through 24Strong.

What is the favorite part of coaching and favourite class to coach?

Although she loves all classes offered, she especially enjoys coaching the competitive students and can see a lot of her younger self in those students. “As a coach you get to see potential and help your students pursue and reach their goals.”

What is your favourite motto?

“Believe - Achieve - Inspire” – these three words are written on a wall of the dance studio; have confidence and believe in your goals, achieve your goals, then inspire those around you.

If you had a piece of advice for a new business, to help them succeed, what would it be?

Know that you don’t have to do it alone - even if it is uncomfortable, let people help you. The sooner you accept the help, the faster your goals can be achieved.

Why is it important to support local?

By supporting a young entrepreneur, you’re showing them everything you need to succeed is right here on PEI; there are amazing opportunities on the island if you start looking for them. If you show the next generation everything they need is here, then it creates a cycle for future generations.

Meet: Jessica and Mike Fritz, Owners of The Gallery – Coffee House & Bistro, 82 Great George St.

When did you open and Why this Business?

We opened The Gallery in March 2021. Inspired by our seasonal coffee shop in St. Peters Bay Black & White - Café and Bakery, we wanted to bring some of our offerings to town. Looking for a unique location we stumbled upon this beautiful heritage building - a former art gallery.

Showcasing local produce, products, and art is what we love so it was just a natural fit to continue doing it in this cozy light-flooded spot in the heart of Charlottetown.

What is unique about your business?

We bake and make everything from scratch and with love. Using high-quality and local ingredients where we can, our offerings are inspired by our European roots fused with Canadian tastes.

Why an entrepreneur’s life?

Cause you can do what you love. And you're all in.

What do you love most about operating your business in Downtown Charlottetown?

The support of the community. We are astonished about how many regulars we already have. Thank you for coming back all the time!

Why do your clients love your business?

We believe it's because of our unique space where food and art meet. And because we offer something for everyone. Having coffee and cake after church, meeting for a drink with friends, Sunday breakfast with the family, a quiet corner to study...?! Our big, inviting space and the variety of food offerings has all our guests covered.

What’s the favorite item/product that you sell?

Just one?! I think it has to be a tie between our savoury breakfast burrito - one in a kind - and our rich, gluten-free brownie made with our very own Fritz Chocolate.

What’s your favourite saying/motto/phrase?

If not now, then when?

If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

Keep going. It's not easy but every problem solved is one step forward toward your success. Also, don't hesitate to ask others for their opinion and advice. You don't have to have all the answers. This Island has a great community of like-minded entrepreneurs and support groups and associations. They are all happy to help.

Why is it important to support local?

Cause we are in this together. It's your neighbours and friends who run small businesses, who work hard to provide a unique product or service, who give back to the community, who go above and beyond to make you happy…

How can Islanders support small business?

Consider a small business over a big or chain store when making purchasing choices when/ if you can. Share and talk about your favourite local business on social media. And most importantly, tell them in person when they did not do a good job. Because that's how we learn and how we can fix things for you. Also, feel free to tell them if you like them. Because it's true what they say, a compliment to a small business owner brings a whole big wide smile onto their face.

Do you have any additional thoughts?

Thank you Downtown Charlottetown Inc. for supporting your businesses! And thank you to all Islanders for being generous and kind. Stay happy and healthy everyone!

Meet: Adam Sweet, Owner of The Cook's Edge, 155 Queen St.

Business information:

The Cook's Edge is located at 161 Queen St. in Charlottetown, PE C1A 4B4. The Cook's Edge has been in operation since 2015.

Why this Business, when did you open?:

The Cook’s Edge is a boutique kitchen store in Charlottetown PEI, featuring Atlantic Canada’s largest selection of beautiful handcrafted Japanese knives. I got into this business because I saw that the Maritimes had a vibrant food scene but no where to buy industry standard culinary products and handcrafted knives. I also wanted to provide a unique knife sharpening service done by hand on high quality whetstones.

What is unique about your business?

I think the unique thing about my business is my previous experience working as a professional chef. This experience has given me insight on what people really want and need when it comes to cooking. I am able to understand what my customers are looking for and that way they can walk away with a product that is really going to serve them well.

Why an entrepreneur’s life?

I have always dreamed of working for myself. At one point in my career I thought that might mean opening up a restaurant, but after assisting with opening up multiple restaurants I decided that wasn't the route I wanted to take. Opening up The Cook's Edge allows me to still have close ties with the restaurant industry but I also get to work with my other passion, which is handcrafted Japanese chef knives.

What do you love most about operating your business in Downtown Charlottetown?

I love the business community in Charlottetown, everyone is very supportive and there is a really good vibe here.

Why do your clients love your business?

I think our clients love our business because we pride ourselves on exceptional service. We are always available to answer any questions and give our customers a very personalized shopping experience. We also try to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and we genuinely care about making each customer happy.

What’s the favorite item/product that you sell?

While we love and stand behind all of the products that we sell, Takeda knives do have a special place in our heart because he was the first blacksmith we formed a partnership with when we opened The Cook's Edge. We have loved his knives well before opening the shop, they are world renowned for a reason.

What is your favourite saying/motto/phrase?

I don’t really have a motto other than "Don't put your knives in the dishwasher".

If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

Treat your employees well so they are happy to come to work and really focus on providing exceptional customer service.

Why is it important to support local?

It is important to support all the smaller specialty shops in your community owned by people who live in and care about that community. There are so many small businesses that make Charlottetown the charming place that it is and it would be a shame to not give them the support they need to thrive and grow.

How can Islanders support small business?

Islanders can support small businesses by of course shopping local but also just by simple (free) things such as liking and sharing posts that businesses make on social media so that they reach a wider audience.

Meet: Amy Smith (right) and Verena Varga (left), Co Owners of Farmacy+Fermentary, 152A Great George St.

Why this Business, when did you open?:

The Farmacy is PEI's first and only Kombucha Tap room, serving our own organic, locally made kombucha: on tap, to go, in cocktails and mocktails! The Farmacy also features an organic, seasonal, plant-based café, with ingredients supplied by our own certified organic vegetable farm, called Heart Beet Organics, located just 15 km away in Darlington, PE. We also make a variety of fermented vegetables with our produce like: sauerkraut, kimchi, pickled beans, cucumbers, and turnips, as well as our own fermented hot sauce. These products are used in our lunches and are available for purchase in our Marche. We also operate a Pop-Up Farmer's Market every Saturday, year-round, where we sell our fresh produce, as well as products from other small Island businesses like: raw honey, artisanal chocolate, organic sourdough bread, hand-crafted salves, balms and soaps.

What is unique about your business?

We make or grow most of the items used in our café, and if we don't grow it, we usually know who did and can tell you honestly about their growing practices. We use primarily certified organic ingredients in all of our sauces, dressings, and they are all gluten free as well. Everything is vegetarian, and many (if not all) of our dishes are also vegan and can be made Gluten Free. The Farmacy is the best of truly local, Farm-to-Table, organic, seasonal plant-based food available downtown!

Why do your clients love your business?

Our customers continue to tell us how happy they are to have a business like ours located downtown. They love the fresh, healthy meal options, and the fact that they can pick up certified organic, locally grown veggies throughout the week - downtown!

What’s the favorite item/product that you sell?

Kombucha!

What’s your favourite saying/motto/phrase?

Let food be thy medicine

Why is it important to support local?

For every dollar spent in a local business, that business is likely to invest $5 in the local economy. Keeping the money in the community builds a better, stronger Island for everyone!

How can Islanders support small business?

Always choose local first!

Meet: Mirna & Joe Dow, Owners/Operators, Dow's Fashions, 145 Great George St.

Why this business, when did you open?

Having our own business was always what we wanted and we both love fashion, so it was an easy decision. George Dow started Dows men’s wear 58 years ago and Joseph (in Photo) joined his dad 30 years ago and Mirna (in photo) joined 22 years ago and opened the ladies wear in the second level of Dows Men’s wear.

What is unique about your business?

Our business offers quality clothing that was carefully selected by us with our customers in mind. customer service also a top priority, when you come into our shop, we treat you like a friend that we like to see again and again.

Why an entrepreneur’s life?

An Entrepreneur life gives you the freedom and flexibility you cannot have with other jobs. The fruits of your hard work and long hours come back to reward you.

Why your downtown location?

The Downtown location is always a favorite place for locals and tourists alike, who would not want to stay, eat, and shop in the heart of any City. I know when we travel, we always stay downtown in any city we go to.

What you love about it?

My favorite part of our business of course the customers, we love the interaction with people and love helping them find their perfect look and make them feel good in their clothes. It is our passion, and we couldn’t imagine ourselves doing anything else.

Why do your clients love your shop?

I would think they love the shop because of the special care and customer service they get from us when they come here and also the love of our selection of clothing and great brands keep them coming back.

Why is it important to Support/Shop Local?

It is extremely important to support locals because the money you spend on the island will stay on the island and that would keep the economy stimulated.

Why is it important to support Downtown Business?

Downtown is the heart of every city and if the heart dies the city dies so we need to keep the heart beating. Please support Local.

Meet: Chris Francis - Receiver Coffee, 128 Richmond St.

Tell us about your buisness:

Receiver Coffee Co is a Charlottetown based coffee company with various locations including a roastery and commercial bakery. Since opening in June of 2014, it has been our goal to provide Charlottetown with transparently sourced coffee that is roasted to highlight natural characteristics in each coffee. We quickly recognized that great tasting coffee wasn’t enough; there are huge issues with sustainability in the specialty coffee industry. We made it our goal to work towards developing lasting relationships with coffee professionals and producers who share the common purpose of finding respectful solutions for sustainable industry standards and consistent quality.

Why this Business, when did you open?

We opened Receiver on Victoria Row in 2014. We had a smaller shop that we called ROW 142 further up the street that was very tiny. We quickly saw the limitations of the space and decided it was time to find a larger location. We had always loved the space that had formerly been Resturante Diem and as they say, where there's a will there's a way.

I was 23 years old when we opened the Victoria Row location. I knew very little about coffee roasting at the time and even less about business (haha). I had been doing a little bit of touring with my old band North Lakes, and when we were in different cities I always found myself searching for cafes. I have always been attracted to the energy of a community cafe. They offer a space for different people in the community to meet and engage with each other.

We realized that there was a huge opportunity for a coffee shop that focused on specialty coffees and lighter roasts that highlight the flavor characteristics that are intrinsic to the coffees. As we learned more about coffee and roasting we fell more in love with the industry.

What is unique about your business?

I think that there are a lot of things that are pretty unique about our business. When it comes to coffee, we put a great deal of energy into making connections with the farmers who grow our coffees. It has been our goal since day one to find delicious coffees and build relationships with the individuals who grow them. We are incredibly lucky to have the lives we have in a place like Charlottetown. We feel it is our responsibility as a coffee company to always think about the farmers we buy from. We are as reliant on them as they are on us and that makes for a very special connection. We believe that Receiver Coffee Company is a part of something bigger growing in the world: a push for businesses to be socially progressive and grow with integrity. We continue to commit to our mission and vision to care for our customers, staff members, suppliers and everyone we interact with.

Why an entrepreneur’s life?

I think I speak for all entrepreneurs everywhere when I say there are high highs and low lows haha. I love the fact that every day offers new opportunities and learning experiences. I am a very hands-on person and I love learning new things. A lot of the time, you are forced to learn things out of necessity, but you also have the option to direct your business towards your interests as an individual. Another very exciting part of being an entrepreneur is the opportunity to build a community around your business. We all have financial goals for our business, but the real reward, for me, has been the relationships I have developed with our staff and customers.

I think owning your own business can teach you a lot about people (and yourself).

Why your downtown location?

We love having our shops in the heart of downtown Charlottetown. We love being able to add to the vibrancy of our community. We have always loved being able to be a part of people’s daily routines. We have such a culturally rich and diverse community and downtown really allowing us to be a part of it. We live in a very supportive community and we have always loved the support we have received from it.

Why do your clients love your shop?

I think that people love our shops for a lot of reasons. We have always made it a priority to get to know our customers and make them feel welcome. We have always tried to make sure that we are more than a cup of coffee to our customers. We like to think of ourselves as a lifestyle brand as much as a coffee shop. We want to be a part of people’s everyday lives because we care about our community and the people who are a part of it.

We are very passionate about what we do as well and I think that is infectious. Whether we are roasting new coffees or creating new menu items we approach our job with a great deal of passion and excitement and I think our customers can really feel that energy in our work.

Why is it important to support local?

One of the biggest lessons that we have taken away from the pandemic has been the fragility of businesses and our economy. We have seen a lot of huge businesses and industries crumble in the face of covid-19. It taught us the importance of supporting small businesses in a huge way. If you want to have a service, or product, or a vibrant and exciting community, you have to support it.. We are very fortunate to live where we do and to have the opportunities that we have. If we want others to continue to have the same opportunities we have had, we have to support our community.

Meet: Peter Norton, Owner of Nortons Jewellers, 160 Queen St.

Nortons Jewellers located on Queen St in The Confederation Court Mall. Peter began his entrepreneurial career working in the family jewellery business, with his father Fred and mother Lois, while he was in high school. Eventually, he took over the business from his parents and now his son, Craig Norton, has joined the business giving them 47 years of combined experience in diamond expertise, goldsmithing and jewellery repair.

Since day one, Nortons has always been located in downtown Charlottetown and Peter likes the fact that the downtown business community is filled with like-minded independent small business owners like himself. Owners who over the years have become the backbone of Charlottetown’s downtown environment. Says Peter “Small businesses offer so much more than corporate or big box stores. We get to know our customers on a first-name basis. We handpick the merchandise that we carry making the shopping experience more unique and one of a kind.”

What gives Peter happiness and contentment is knowing that his business has played an integral part in helping people celebrate special milestones in their lives. “We are here helping people choose or design the perfect engagement ring, anniversary gift, graduation and other momentous occasions. It’s a happy place to work.”

Who hasn’t heard or memorized the Nortons jingle on the local radio station? Interestingly enough, it’s usually Peter voicing his own commercials and speaking about what he knows the best - jewellery.

In his day to day life, it’s not uncommon to find Peter grabbing a bite of lunch at any one of the downtown eateries or patronizing a downtown restaurant for dinner several times a week. Peter believes in supporting downtown Charlottetown and his fellow downtown business colleagues whether it’s dining out, grabbing a coffee, doing his banking or making purchases at local independent stores. “I honestly do not remember the last time I frequented a mall other than the Confederation Court Mall. I can find pretty much everything I need downtown.”

“Our local population and visitors have come to take pride and appreciate the uniqueness and charm of downtown Charlottetown. We’ve all seen and experienced the business landscape grow and change with improvements made in our downtown offerings, services and events over the past 30 years.”

“I feel that we all need to do our part in order to sustain our downtown. I urge my fellow citizens to make it a priority and show your pride in Charlottetown by spending your dollars in small local business now, and especially with the upcoming holiday season. I know for sure that I will continue to spend my money in my business community”

Meet: Emma Hill, Owner-Operator of Isla Clothing, located in The Confederation Court Mall

Emma Hill is a proud Prince Edward Islander. After she graduated high school she lived in Halifax for several years. There she enjoyed the many local boutiques and dreamed of having her own one day.

Upon returning to PEI, she noticed amongst all the lovely local shops, there was something missing. That is when she came up with the idea to open Isla Clothing. Isla will soon celebrate it's one year anniversary. Emma says "it has been one the most challenging and rewarding experiences to start my own business".

What makes Isla Clothing unique?

Isla Clothing offers a variety of brands that are not available elsewhere on PEI. "My goal is to have a store where people can find unique pieces. I love helping customers find that right outfit that makes them feel good and confident".

Why did you Choose Downtown Charlottetown?

I love working in downtown Charlottetown! There is a real sense of community and people really look out for each other. I have no doubt that the Confederation Court Mall was the right place for me to open my business. The merchants have all been so welcoming and encouraging during my first year.

Meet: Julia Campbell, JEMS Boutique and The Anne of Green Gables Store, 72 Queen St.

Julia tell us about you?

I studied classical piano performance at mount Allison university.

Why this business?

This business choose me! My parents, George and Maureen Campbell,  started this business 40 years ago and I had the pleasure of joining 10 years ago when I moved back to PEI.

What makes your business unique?

Our business is unique because we are family run, a small ‘big’ business, and a big ‘small’ business- which offers incredible dynamics!

Why an Entrepreneur’s life?

An entrepreneur’s life offers highs and lows that have only made me appreciate everything I have even more

When and where did your business begin?

The Anne of Green gables museum opened in 1970- we launch KSW in 1998, took over the Anne stores in 2006, and JEMS Boutique opened in 2012. Lots of birthdays!

Why downtown?

Charlottetown provides the hustle and bustle of a bigger city during the summer months but is small enough that you can make it from one tip of Downtown to another in 20 minutes, and still feel the sense of community.

What does success mean?

I would define success by hearing back from customers and their friends that they had a positive experience with us, and the ability to give back to our community.

Why do your clients love your business?

I think our clients love our space because we work hard to make it as welcoming to as many as possible, we push people out of their ‘style’ comfort zones and have them find out it’s where they wanted to be!

Your priorities are?

My top 3 priorities are customer service, marketing, and inventory control.

Why Downtown Charlottetown for your location of choice?

Running a business in Charlottetown allows us to conduct business, give back to our community, and ask our clientele what they want to see, and get a response! It is very rewarding to know you value your customer's opinions and have them part of the decisions you make.

How do motivate your team?

Our team stays motivated by staying current in social issues and what’s important to us as a business, constantly aiming for the next level, setting personal and team targets, and getting great music going at the store and having fun!

How can Islanders support small business?

Islanders can help support us by purchasing in-store or online, telling their friends and family about us, liking, or sharing our social media posts, or giving us constructive criticism!

What is your ask to the community?

Our ask is that you look, inquire, and try local first! It is a change In Mind shift but will help keep our business community alive and well, and able to give back to all of the organizations so many donate their time and resources to. “Get comfortable with the being uncomfortable”.

Meet: Steve Bellamy, CEO Confederation Centre of the Arts, 145 Richmond St.

Tell us a little bit about you. . .

I grew up in Charlottetown and in 1995 left to live and work in Montreal, Banff, Hartford, and Toronto. My career has been spent in music recording, teaching, and arts administration. I have started two businesses in the music industry and have been fortunate to enjoy a life working with entrepreneurs and artists. In 2018 I moved back home to Charlottetown, PEI, and am privileged to work at the Confederation Centre of the Arts.

Tell us About the Confederation Centre of the Arts

Confederation Centre of the Arts is a collection of several divisions and activities. The big picture is that we are an Art Gallery, a Performing Arts Theatre, and an Arts Education and Heritage learning center. Within those divisions, there are several exciting business activities from writing and developing new shows, to training dancers and visual artists, to presenting new and exciting ways for the public to engage with creativity and stories. We are uniquely positioned to host national arts presentations on stage and in the gallery for Islanders and others in the region to enjoy. We are also uniquely positioned to present Atlantic regional stories and artists to national and international artists. It’s exciting to be part of a place that can bring PEI to the world, and the world to PEI!

What do you love about it?

We are fortunate to operate in Charlottetown where we enjoy high visibility for tourists and locals alike. While we are trying to do more activity in the rest of PEI as well, our main facility in Charlottetown allows us to benefit from the adjacencies of the wonderful restaurants and retail businesses here, and the other attractions such as galleries, historic sites, waterfront, and hotels. Charlottetown is a beautiful city with an abundance of offerings that are far greater than any other city this size across Canada.

Why is it important to Support Local?

Many business sectors – especially those that rely on tourists – have been seriously affected by the pandemic. It is critically important not only to support local, but to give some thought to which businesses have been negatively affected by the loss of visitors, and try to support those businesses. PEI is small and that has helped our leaders manage the health risks of COVID through more thorough tracking and screening than other jurisdictions can do. But the downside of being small is that we don’t have the population base to support the many businesses that rely on visitors. So supporting local becomes even more important in times like this.

Meet: Kim MacKenzie, Owner of kc | Clothing

133 Queen St.

When did you Open?

We opened in 1993 - so we are in our 28th year

Tell us about your business:

We have and will always be a boutique that caters to men and women, offering brands that can keep the generational and the social aspect of shopping alive and well.  We aim to bridge casual and contemporary with high quality lifestyle clothing targeted at fashion aware and quality conscious men and women.  We inventory some brands that cross traditional fashion boundaries transitioning athleisure wear to casual to office and night out, alongside high fashion brands that are lifestyle and streetwear driven.

What do you love most about running your business?

I love the people first and foremost.  I love chatting and getting to know them.  My coworkers always say, “you know everyone” and I am sure when I am on the selling floor, they feel I chat to much 😊 but that is what I do and love to do! The other things I love about running my own business is the flexibility it offers me, keeps me up to date with trends and technology and I love the buying process of retail.   Last but not least…I love my staff…some have come and gone but I have been lucky to get to know them all. They keep the shop looking great and are vital to the smooth operation of the business. I value their input and they keep me on my toes!

What do you love most about operating your business in Downtown Charlottetown?

I love Downtown Charlottetown!  I grew up downtown and love the atmosphere that surrounds our downtown.  My business has and always will be located here, in the heart of the city.  The hustle and bustle on a small scale is what makes us unique and in the tourism season Charlottetown is humming with excitement.  Tourists are always telling us how lucky we are to live here, and I love hearing that!

What’s your favourite item/product that you sell?

Clothing…I love clothing…I can’t pick just one thing!

What’s your favourite saying/motto/phrase?

Treat people the way you would like to be treated.

Meet: Savannah Belsher-MacLean, Owner of Green Eye Designs, 160 Richmond St.

Year Opened: 2014

Tell us about your business:

Green Eye Designs was founded by one of my dear friends, Morgan Saulnier, to sell her scarves and highlight other local makers, including myself, through my jewelry company Swoon Creations. I purchased Green Eye Designs at the beginning of the year to continue to celebrate PEI makers and highlight products produced here on the Island for locals and visitors alike. We have a shop on Victoria Row and recently launched a new website for people to purchase more easily online.

What do you love most about running your business?

I love finding the right gift for someone and discovering all the beautiful things that Islanders produce to make someone’s life a bit brighter. We have tons of products in our shop that are one-of-a-kind, which allows everyone to express themselves uniquely.

What do you love most about operating your business in Downtown Charlottetown?

This summer will be my first season of owning a shop in Downtown Charlottetown, but I have partnered with many local shops and entrepreneurs in my past work. I am excited to work together to reset the Island economy and get people back downtown to shop again. I am also working on creating ways to get PEI-made goods that our visitors have become attached to shipped to them until they can visit us again.

What’s the favourite item/product that you sell?

Our scarves and gemstone necklaces have been our best-sellers over the years. We have new designs to suit each season.

What’s your favourite saying/motto/phrase?

I have a few favourites, but a current fave quote is “Work for a cause, not for applause” by Ashleigh Hansberger. Supporting other artists and makers, and promoting Prince Edward Island are my causes.

If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

There is a thrill of being in business for yourself. I have started several companies myself and with my husband, Todd MacLean. With that thrill, there is the other side of the coin. Some days can be challenging and scary, but if you keep pushing yourself and build a good support network, you can find those moments of excitement that keep you going.

We are inspired by European fashion while also keeping an eye on select North American staples. With a brand portfolio that includes Fred Perry, Albam, C.P. Company, Colourful Standard, Original Penguin and many more, we will continue to seek out the latest styles and trends season after season. What do you love most about running your business?

The happiness you can see on people's faces when they find something they love. It's a fun thing to be part of. I also enjoy the conversations with people who come in the store. Whether it's talking about the clothes or just what's going on in people's lives, it's been really good getting to know people better.

What do you love most about operating your business in Downtown Charlottetown?

The welcome from other shop owners in the downtown community has been incredible. One day I hope to be able to offer the same assistance and guidance to new entrepreneurs. Also just being in the heart of downtown Charlottetown with the buzz around the town (during normal summers) is something that i knew Eastwood Ave. would have to be part of.

What’s the favorite item/product that you sell?

Honestly it's very hard to pick because I love all of the items that we carry, but if i had to pick it would either be the Deperlante Heritage Jacket in Marsouin from Armor-Lux or the Chambray Button-Up Shirt in Normal-washed denim from C.P. Company.

What’s your favourite saying/motto/phrase?

Never allow waiting to become a habit. Live your dreams and take risks. Life is happening now.

If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

Well I'm pretty new to being a business owner, but some of things I've learnt along the way is you have to follow your instincts. If you believe in something, stick with it. It'll be hard work, there will be sleepless nights, there will be times where you question why you're doing this and if it's the right thing to do, but in the end, when you see a customer truly happy with something you offer, it'll be truly worth it.

Any additional thoughts, comments.

When you get a spare few minutes, come and give us a visit. We offer brands and styles that are not commonly found on the East Coast of Canada.

When did you open? 1997.

What did you study? Business – UPEI BBA – 1989; Consulting CMC 1991; Strategic Coach – Chicago – 2008-2011

Why this business?

I enjoy marketing and the revenue and sales side of the business. I have been working in downtown for nearly thirty years and love to see the rejuvenation and strength of the Capital City and its downtown core.

What is unique about your business?

We are based in Charlottetown but do work virtually all over Canada. We were on the founding committee for Downtown Charlottetown many years ago – when the picture was bleak. We helped research and pitch the BIA to the City of Charlottetown.

Why an entrepreneur’s life?

It’s fun to have the freedom to create, to make mistakes, to be responsible for your efforts

Why your downtown location?

Love Sydney St. and lower Queen. The streetscape has a vibe, character, and an ambiance.

What do you love about it?

The history, the preserved architecture, the mix of residents, businesses and visitors creates a pulse

If you could begin again what you would change? Nothing. . . maybe take dance lessons. Love music but can’t sing and can’t dance.

How do you motivate employees?

I don’t – they motivate me. We spend a lot of time trying to hire the right people for the right roles. We have very little turnover. When you have the right staff in our business – they are self-motivated.

How would you define success?

Having a fun and enjoyable place to spend 40 to 50 hours a week.

Why do your clients love your business?

The people. . . and their commitment to getting results and the job done.

What are your business goals over the next 5 years?

The main goals are to deepen the digital products and services from Dunne Group and to build 20 or so nice residential apartments on Water St.

Share a short story, that represents why you love operating your business in Charlottetown.

Last summer, we had a business dinner on one of the great outdoor patios in the downtown. My clients (Don McDougall and Geoffrey Irving) from Mill River PEI hadn’t been to a patio for dinner in Charlottetown for a number of years and we had such a great experience. During the evening, dining outdoors they/we met former business colleagues from Ontario, various elected officials, and many other their friends, relatives, and acquaintances who just happened to be dining or strolling on the street. At the end of dinner, Don and Geoffrey remarked, “Downtown Charlottetown is such a great place to see so many great people enjoying themselves – you can see so many and so much in a couple of hours..” And he was correct.

How do you and your team stay motivated?

We are lucky to live where we do. With a great Chief Public Health Office, Responsive Government Officials, and a population that works hard to follow rules – we’ve been mostly COVID free. That is very motivating and something to be thankful for. While the world is in a tough place, we have it pretty darn good here.

What resources have you found helpful?

Federal Programs for wage subsidies have been great; Federal rent relief – while a bit complex for tenants – has been great. The Province has set-up good programs for Tourism operators and small business (and they (Business Minister MacKay and staff) have been very approachable and accessible

How can Islanders best support your business?

Islanders can best support our business by supporting local downtown retailers, hoteliers, and restaurants. When local business to consumer business do-well, our consulting and real estate businesses will do well
