THE FUTURE OF MARTIME DOWNTOWNS & MAIN STREETS
Today, the Board of Downtowns Atlantic Canada [DAC] formally released unprecedented research focused on Maritime downtowns and main streets and the businesses which comprise them.
In a world still recovering from the long-reaching impacts of COVID, Downtowns Atlantic Canada wanted to learn more about the changing profile of its businesses and what they considered to be their greatest challenge and what they viewed as the best opportunity for their downtown or main street to recover. Fifteen business improvement associations in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island conducted a business census of 4300+ businesses. The findings are contained in the Future of Maritime Downtowns & Main Streets [attached].
The work reveals that the businesses of Maritime downtowns and main streets are at a critical crossroad. They have always been on the front lines of change, but never more than now. Buffeted by COVID, challenged by online shopping, and confronted with changing work paerns, downtown & main street businesses need government and the public’s support as they continue to reposition themselves in a changed world.
Over 1700 businesses completed the opinion part of the census, revealing the following as their
foremost business challenges & opportunities:
Foremost Challenge
1. Staffing
2. Inflation & Current Economic Conditions
3. Parking
4. Lack of Foot Traffic/Online Shopping
5. [Perceived] Security & Street Issues
Foremost Opportunity
1. District Business Mix
2. Parking Innovations
3. Markeng Support
4. More Events & Programs
5. Increased Foot Traffic & Shop Local Programs
DAC President Dawn Alan says ‘our member organizations continue to create new means of addressing challenges and capitalizing on opportunities. This time of the year is particularly valuable to our downtown & main street businesses as people are in a giving spirit and enjoy supporting local businesses which provide so many unique gifts and services. Many of our partners have provided some irresistible gift card opportunities for the public to give generously yet save spectacularly!’
DAC Vice-President, Tim Rissesco, says that the new year will provide an excellent start for Downtowns Atlantic Canada to work with its members to focus on these challenges and opportunities and to forge closer working relationships with the three levels of government and their community-building
partners.’
